you would need to look for a padlock symbol which would appear along the top line at the end of the website address or on the right side at the bottom (depending of what system you have). Why pay for anti virus? there are several free ones out there that have had very good reviews. Personally, I am with Avast. see this site
http://www.avast.com/ and click onto 'downloads' & then 'free home edition'. hope this helps
I have about 5 security products on my PC and dont pay for any of them. And I have never had a problem with viruses and so on.

I use the free versions of:

AVG Anti Virus

Zone Alarm Firewall

Adaware

WinPatrol

There are plenty of other free products that are as good (if not better) than Norton.

Just beause they are free it does not make them bad.

Some are only only free for home use and are sold to companies, like AVG and Zone Alarm.

thank you vehelpfulguy and thelewisgang, I will download a free anti virus as you suggest, thank you both very much indeed.
Like the other 2 posts I use free security programs . Avast! , Spybot search & destroy & Adaware . If you do decide to uninstall Norton you will need a tool from here http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo .nsf/docid/2005033108162039
