Legally, you're not supposed to connect to the phone line any equipment (phone, fax, modem, etc) that hasn't been approved for use in Australia.

In practice, most people who travel with notebook computers have a modem, which may or may not be a brand that's approved. Don't worry, it will work. . The standard Australian connector is the British-style 610,

It may work, I cant find the standards - its 3:00am, however, be warned, we use 240volt 50 cycle AC power and a 3 pin electrical plug - see here for diagrams and descriptions, so you will need a power supply that can auto detect or be adjustable and a cord with the appropriate plug (or wall wart with plug).

The most common type of broadband is ADSL and the most common connection to a phone line is RJ11 - 600 series were the standard for a long time but you will very rarely see one now, they have been phased out for years.
Dial up won't work ... you'll need a local ISP

same for adsl
... but the hardware is the same
