My subscription to Norton expires in a couple of days time and I would like to use a free anti virus such as AVG or AVAST. Has anyone got any thoughts as to which of these is best or are there any other programs that I should look at. I have also been told that although AVG is free you have to pay for technical support amongst other things. Is this true and does it apply to other anti virus programs. Finally, if my computer holds my banking details then is a free package going to be secure enough or should I purchase a more advanced program. Thanks for any help.

Both AVG and Avast are good as free versions, it goes without saying that you will get more bells and whistles if you decide to buy the full on versions.

One thing I will say though is that before installing any new AV make sure you completelyu get shut of Norton.
The ONLY way to do this is to go here;
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo .nsf/docid/2005033108162039

This will remove it thoroughly as against dumping it through Add/Remove.
I have used C.O.M.O.D.O Anti Virus and Firewall for years, it is free and i have had no problems at all, just tap the name into Google,
AVG and Avast are as good as each other and do the job of the bigger names without eating up the computers resourses like McAfee and Norton do.
( excuse my spelling)
Whether you are a novice or more experienced I recommend Avast as it is a truly set it and forget it programme in respect of updates.

it catches the little devils no problem I have used it for years after Norton was ruined when the original developer sold out.Norton is such an awful programme and have had no problems

AVG is OK but is not as easy to use as Avast

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I chose Avast and there have been no problems so far but I can't believe how slow my computer was with Norton.
