Anyone else had recent problems with AVG 8 the free version. After a couple of months of working fine I switched on today and the e-mail scanner would not function.

Did a google and looked at AVG forums but couldn't get it to work. Uninstalled and downloaded fresh version but this would not install and kept giving error messages.

Anyway i have now totally uninstalled AVG and am giving Avast a try.

I used to run Zone Alarm and AVG and after years of good service both have now given me severe problems so have had to change to Comodo and Avast.

Is this a ploy to get us to buy the paid for versions ???

I had problems with updates so uninstalled & reinstalled . Worked ok for a few days then stopped again . I've seen other posts on here with similar problems so like you I've switched to Avast . Seems ok except I did a thorough the scan yesterday - took 8 hours . Hopefully they'll get it sorted . I'm assuming it's just your normal teething problems with a new version .
Mine is version 8.0.138 and is working just fine.

I too, am usually cynical with free programs but not with Grisoft in this case. It has been commercially proven that free basic programs with paid for deluxe options generates a lot more business than deleting a free version and replacing it with a paid for version.
If, for instance, Answerbank would offer a version that bypasses all those advertiser connections that slow the site down to a crawl, quite a few wouldn't mind paying a few quid per month for an ad-free version. But if the whole site would become a paid for only edition, most members would say goodbye.
What adverts ? I use Firefox
I had similar trouble-went to update and kept coming up"cannot connect".Completely messed up Firefox browser.
Cut my ties and have gone with Avast who seem(at the moment) reliable unlike AVG who have really gone haywire since AVG8 came out
