i have avast antivirus at the moment and i heard it wasnt good, can you recommend what you think is the best free antivirus?

It is actually very good. Another option is AVG Free. AVG beats Avast at Heuristic scanning, but Avast beats AVG in general detection.

I use Avast and have done on a number of PCs for a few years with no problems at all. It updates almost every day and doesn't slow the PC down like other antivirus software.
