Contact Computer Active ( 0nline ) & they will direct you to free software that will convert your files. I use Switch - free & good.

This will convert files for you:
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

But, it won't convert files you've bought from the iTunes Music Store.

Additionally, you could just encode your stuff in mp3 format from the start, if you use both iTunes and media player frequently.

Thanks guys,

Fo3nix, I'll give dbpoweramp a go. Sorry to sound ignorant, but how do I encode my files as mp3 from the start?

Basically, I've got a load of tunes on my computer, some off CDs, some mp3s and some itunes files from Limewire. So some can be played by i-tunes and some by media player. I just want them all to be recognised by media player...

In iTunes, click edit->preferences. in the advanced tab, there's an importaning sub-tab. change that to read mp3 (160kbps).

also, forgot to mention this, but you can use iTunes to encode into mp3 now too. you can highlight the files you want to turn into mp3s, right-click them, and click convert to mp3.
