For the iPhone you must have iTunes. iTunes will find all the music on your PC/Laptop and convert into iTunes... unfortunately this means that you will have two copies of everything.

I just use iTunes, it's much simpler.
You won't have two copies of everything. The library, whether it is Windows Media Player, iTunes or any other ones, only has a short cut to the music file, not the file itself.

Hi
I'm helping my son sort his iPhone out on his laptop, he does have itunes and I was trying to transfer the windows media files to itunes last night and get itunes to sync them to his iPhone but it wasn't happening. Do I need to configure his itunes to automatically gather up all music files from his laptop or should I first check what sort of files the music files are?

Thanks
Have a look at this link from Apple : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1473
Itunes should take care of the transfer for you
The music files may be WMP, not MP3. You need to check.
