Violent crime is sweeping through the streets of London. In Birmingham a young woman is car-jacked and her 4-week-old baby goes missing in the process. In Worcester a 3-year-old is targeted in an acid attack.

What the hell is happening in our society?

Are you worried? I am. I had a run-in the other day with a lunatic driver whilst reversing off my driveway. I was so worried all day long that he would come back and vandalise my house or car, or do something worse.

By the way, this is not a political thread. I have my thoughts on what has caused violent crime to spike but my question is simply ... "Are you worried?"

No, because if I did I'd be too scared to live as I choose.
Things have always happened in society. Always will, most likely. Not everyone is a decent social citizen; you're just more aware of it these days, or maybe less expecting of it.
not really

No.
Not especially, no.
No.
Dreadful things have always happened, some near to me some others further away - I can't live my life continually worried.

I was more worried about the happenings around when I was a new Mum like you - I think that comes with the job.

I envy you guys. I find road rage is more common now. I have had fists waved at me and threats made, gestures to "get out of the car" - always by men - and not because I'm a bad driver but because I've dared to blast my horn or flash my lights when they've driven wrecklessly. The anger on their faces is truly scary.

I wonder if people in general have upped their aggression because they themselves feel more threatened.
but by blasting your horn an flashing your lights, you are just participating in the road rage yourself, Perhaps you have upped your agression too?
My Husband threatened more than once to disconnect my Daughter's car horn - he hated it.

Bednobs, I flashed my lights at a young driver the other day because he turned into my road and sped like a lunatice whilst I was reversing off my drive. If he'd have hit my car, he'd have likely ploughed into my son's car seat. He didn't make any attempt to slow down and swerved and mounted the curb to avoid hitting me. As he did so, he stuck the Vs up to me. I responded likewise.

At the point I flashed him, I was merely trying to say, "Hey, slow down."
i wish there was a hand signal to say sorry, i know i just did an idiotic thing in front of you, i have no idea why, but it was a mistake. I would find that handy!
ok

Far from OK in my opinion. I'm certain he doesn't live in this street. Sometimes this road is used as a short-cut but idiots.

Yes as I type I’m on a speedboat out of the uk.

Of course not, in NI unfortunately violence was the order of the say so I grew up amongst worse troubles as many have so not nice to hear about.

What were your thoughts about why crimes spiked?
not really sure how effective flashing someone while you are reversing side on to them would be though, the person probably didnt even see. At any rate, glad your car wasn't hit

/// I flashed my lights at a young driver the other day because he turned into my road and sped like a lunatice(sic) whilst I was reversing off my drive ///

In that case surely your lights would have been pointing at your property not a speeding driver?

Baldric, I had almost fully turned and was ready to turn the steering wheel the other way. As the car sped towards me, I think I froze. He got so close that turning the other way was impossible, and hence he mounted the curb.

I am going to invest in a dashcam!

Great idea we all have them here.
no. I've been wandering the streets of London for years and seen nothing to worry me.
