I'm using a version of Word which dates back many years. How can I find out precisely which one it is, please? Most of the time, if I receive a Word document via email it converts it automatically to a newer version, but when I tried to send a fairly large attachment the recipient was unable to open it satisfactorily; so I think it may be time to upgrade it as I'm about to start another project.

Thank you, Mamya. It's Word 2002, installed originally with XP but transferred when I upgraded to Windows 7.
My son sent me details of the newest version, which I was planning to download from Amazon, but in the three days it's taken me to decide to do it the price has gone up £23. Now wondering whether to hang on for a bit in case special offers appear as the students are gearing up for university.
Word 2002 documents should be readable in any newer version of Microsoft Word. Have you downloaded all the updates available. Are you using a font that is obscure and may not be on the recipients PC

Computer is set to install Windows updates automatically, so I assume that's OK. I always use Times New Roman or Ariel.
I would have thought it a bit unlikely to be a problem with updates but thought it worth checking. Do you have the option to update other Microsoft products enabled within Windows Updates?
You don't need to spend money on Word - just get yourself Open Office.

Its FREE!

Just be aware that it defaults to saving in its own format, but you can save in Word format.
