The mechanism for cancelling the indicators is a little plastic pip on the steering shaft that knocks a tab with the switch on it. (If that makes sense) So being platic might not take well to WD40. Does it cancel at all even if you rotate the wheel right round?
Usually the only remedy is to remove the wheel and the stalks and check the mechanism, replace if necessary or adjust and tighten everything back up. A local independent garage could do this no problem.
I wouldn't recommend a DIY job due to the airbag ...
I doubt if you have to remove the wheel, Iggle Piggle.

When I have replaced indicator stalks, they have been easily removable without touching the wheel (although admittedly on Vauxhalls not VWs)

Almost certainly the stalk will have to be replaced in this case.

Thanks, mates. My local garage is run by a VW trained engineer so
he'll probably sort it out. I was just wondering if it was a fairly simple DIY job, but I won't risk it now.

Thanks again.

Move it back with your hand :)

At least you don't have to bang the door frame to make the trafficator pop out anymore .... ahem. I'll get my coat.

Yes, Methyl. The fault is intermittent and the stalk can easily be returned by hand. I am sure I can find a replacement part and would be ery interested to know how to fir it. Do you have any clues/ links ?

Cheers.

And Iggle, I started driving when semaphore signals were the norm, and good practice was to give a hand signal first then put out the semaphore indicator. And yes, sometimes assisted with a panel bang !
Have a peruse of this site http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/ there may be someone who has done the job. I remember I did Polo stalks many years ago and I took the wheel off. But I was doing ignition lock barrel as well.
I miss my Polo.
