Thanks rojash appear to have done the desktop bit OK but having trouble with the laptop bit not sure what you mean by select Network where do I find that. Also when buying it was told may have to download a Windows 8 driver onto the laptop. Perhaps I should mention Desktop is Windows 7 while the Laptop is Windows 8
I'm pretty sure that there is no appreciable difference between Win7 and Win8 drivers. (although there is a difference between 32 bit and 64 bit drivers).

On the laptop go to the desktop open the file manager.
Scroll down the left side until you find network, and click it.
Wait for the right-hand window to refresh and you should see any network-connected devices, which should include the printer on the desktop machine (if you can see the desktop machine, but not the printer, try clicking on the desktop machine). Once you can see the printer, you should be able to connect to it by double-clicking it, or by right-clicking and choosing "use" or "connect" (can't remember which - my setup is the opposite to yours with, with the printer physically connected to my Windows 8 machine, and accessed across the network by my Windows 7 machines).

I have now got the printer working on the laptop by using a USB lead between the 2 devices, though a printer icon does not appear in the Devices folder. However my wife would like to be able to sit in the lounge and operate the printer remotely to where the printer is situated. Is this possible, the laptop uses Window 8.
"a printer icon does not appear in the Devices folder"
I suspect you are looking in the device manager.
On the charms bar, select settings, then control panel
From the control panel, select Devices and Printers
