In My Computer it shows 233 free of 289GB which I iunderstand.

Under this it shows icon for Drive D which I thought was the DVD/CD drive and it says against it '1.8 free of 10GB'

When I click on this it shows a recovery file with a date before I aquired my laptop secondhand.

Can I remove this file and what is it? Has someone done a recovery on a disc and also on the hardrive?

Thanks all

Sounds like it's the recovery partition of the laptop. Instead of giving you a recovery disc, the manufacturers provide the recovery software on a partition of the hard disc.

Your manual should tell you how to use the recovery software.
Dont delete this file as you can use it to recover the software if it ever crashes and you need to reinstall Windows. It is only 10Gb so nothing to worry about.
It's a recovery file. You may need it if your machine crashes. I advise you not to delete it.
