With printer cartridges around £30 I am tempted to but cheaper copies. Is this a false economy?

I think so. I have bought substitutes and I find they are not as reliable- and my printer tells me if it's not a genuine cartridge I've installed.
Last one I bought lasted three pages.
If your printer is out of warranty I would consider it. I have an Epson inkjet and have started buying from local Cartridge World at about half price. No problems so far.
I buy them from sellers with good feedback on Ebay for my Epson. No problems so far.
A single set of genuine Epson cartridges for my printer costs over £25.

Ebay sellers, sell 3 sets (12 cartridges) + 3 additional black cartridges (all claimed to be double capacity) for around £8 (with free P&P).

So £8 buys around £200 worth of the genuine stuff – it’s a no brainer as far as I’m concerned.

I work in IT and have seen dozens of printers ruined by fake cartridges. I would strongly advise you not to buy them.
We have a Cannon Pixima ip6600D and they have 6 cartridges at an average cost (genuine Cannon) of £14.99 each. They last the same amount of time as the cheap ones we buy from Jet Tec but these only cost about £4 each! No loss of print quality and they last the same amount of time. Wish we'd realised the cost of replacing these cannon cartridges when we bought the bloomin thing. Lexmark just as bad ~ nearly as cheap to buy a new printer from Tesco than replace the cartridges (new printer £44.95 ~ replacement genuine Lexmark cartridges £39.00)

I alway buy cheaper ones, as long as you only want to print in black and white, the colour is not usually very good.
I get my cartridges for my Brother HL-3040-CN printer re-filled from a firm called Smart Cartridge in Hove

Depends on the printer. I've used CW refills on my Canon for years with no discernible adverse effect.

My previous printer (an HP) was dodgy with anything other than new HP cartridges - and even with them could play up on occasion
I have had two Epson printers ruined by cheap cartridges.

Proper Epson ink contains anti clogging agents, which cheap inks dont have.

I bought a £75 Epson printer and after the proper inks ran out I put in cheap copies, and the Cyan head clogged up.

The rest still work, so it is usable, but the Cyan still does not work and Epson will do nothing as I used cheap ink.

So it is somewhat risky to use cheap inks.
I have been buying ink cartridges for my Epson printer from ukdvdr. co. uk for years & find them excellent.
