I did have a thumbnail for googlearth, that I used to launch the page, bringing up earth as a globe. Its disappeared. Ive tried downloading it again, it seems to download ok but I cant find it and theres no thumbnail

that happened to me first you have to uninstall and them reinstall and it should come back

You simply seem to have lost the shortcut icon to the Google Earth program. If so, you can start Google Earth from Start > Programs.

To create a new icon on your desktop, go to Start > Programs > Google Earth > Google Earth. Right-click on (the last)'Google Earth' and select Send To > Desktop (Create Shortcut).

I just save to favourites and then drag the favourite Icon to my desktop.
