Horse riders (if we've got any on Answerbank...)

What are the terms for pulling up a horse? I mean when you're riding, and stop, is there a term like 'reining in' or similar?

bainbrig you told me your question had nothing to do with Hardy's poem lol
Bainbrig// but it keeps me sane some of the time//
Cold you reserve those times for when you are posting on AB. :-)
It's only clumsy in today's language because the phrase is archaic but will be how they spoke in those days. As for who-a I thought that was limited to cowboy films, the vast majority of riding horses do not respond to spoken commands anyway.
I know what it means danny?
Western trained horses respond very well to spoken commands including 'Whoa' . Its just frowned on in English riding, especially dressage.
They understood 'giddy-up' back in my riding days. Barry Island c. 1963.

Do you remember Glan-y-Mor YMCA Hotel at Barry Island ?
spicerack, I'm sure you've had your leg over a few nice fillies in your time.

Sudden amnesia BB? People on AB who attempt to assist you perhaps don't wish to be referred as toerags.
I recall trying to assist you on your doorbell problem and vowed to steer well clear of you after that. You are not worth the abuse you offer so freely
Sorry, no Retro. Just a little day-tripper.
Retrocop It certainly was disgraceful what he wrote after all the help that was given.
Spicerack One Trick Pony? ;-)
For all of the doorbell kerfuffle he still has his knockers.
"....It is the description of the act of slowing/stopping the horse that I'm interested in...."

1 shorten both reins
2 tighten leg grip with heels down
3 keep shout whoa till it stops

nb If horse is in bolt, pull one rein short enough to pull horses head backward. Follow with 2-3 or you will gall off.
