If you have a standing order or direct debit on your current account, you would contact the bank and ask it to stop the payment.

I think the procedure with credit card firms is the same - tell the card issuer to cancel the monthly charge.

If you are paying something like a gym membership by monthly payments from your credit card, do check the terms and conditions on the contract with the gym.

Many thanks BigMac

No - it's different with credit cards unfortunately. You have given the company that is taking the payment a continuing authority to take it. You have to cancel it with them, not with the credit card company.

It can get awkward if they don't stop - it will be very difficult to get the credit card company to do anything about it, but persistence can pay off - eventually.

It is not considered good financial practise to have standing orders/direct debits on credit card accounts because of the difficulties encountered in cancelling if necessary.
