A elderly female friend was telling me she recently answered the door to someone supposedly a metre reader from her gas supplier. Apparently he had a hi viz on, showed an ID, said he had come to read her gas metre. He didn’t specify what supplier. Being a bit savvy she Ears gave him a mouthful, asking him why, in these times of covid would a company send a stranger, to try and gain entry to someone’s house. She refused him entry. He went away.
A scam it seems. I myself submit readings online. I don’t have one of those smart metres. Won’t have one. But I do/did before covid, get readers coming, maybe once a year, even if I’ve just submitted online.
Has anyone had genuine a metre reader this year.

i have a smart meter on the insistence of the company, not sure its of any use to be honest. I phoned up and complained as i was on a set tariff and they charged me more than usual this month so they decreased the monthly bill.

good that the elderly friend sent him away with a flea in his ear. right thing to do in my opinion
Yes, I had one a couple of weeks ago, he read both meters and a week later I got both my bills with an accurate reading. I was never for one minute suspicious of him, but I know someone from further up the street who wouldn't let him in.
they can't get in our building at any rate we have security door and gates on the balconies.
I had a meter reader come a couple of months ago, my meters are outside.
Yes I had a meter reader come. But he had identification and was masked up.
We have to read our own metres. I phone them the numbers. Three days later there’s a bill on the mat.
How quaint, David. Why don't you submit the readings online?
My MIL has had a metre reader in the last couple of weeks
I get the email requesting my readings, I send them , it's as easy as that
Mil does not have access to a computer and gets confused with the telephone call , I used to do it for her until I was told my help was no longer required
emmie, can you tell me more about your set tariff?
not off hand barry, i only know that i was paying 31 quid a month, and that was on a set tariff with EDF,
barry look up EDF whom i am with
Your tariff may no longer be available, emmie, they change constantly.
i pay 30 quid a month for gas/electric, a good deal, one i negotiated with them, being a sole user
Well done!
I've looked at EDF and they are not advertising a fixed tariff as such only a fixed price per kw.
ok, but it might be worth giving them a ring.
I submit my electric readings either by phone or online.

I did the same with my previous supplier. Occasionally my meter was read by the Hydro on behalf of my supplier.
I've got a smart meter. Pity it doesn't work, because then I wouldn't have to keep sending my own readings.
