Could someone explain the cultural nuances of Godparenting in the Greek Orthodox/ Cypriot community? I have a co-worker who was appalled that my bf is my kids' Godfather- likening it to incest! He also said that in Cyprus, one can never be Godparent to unrelated children of different genders- again, likening it incest. I'm not Greek Orthodox, so I'm not too bothered- just curious as to whether this is generally true or if the guy's is just a bit off! Thanks!

It's a similar tale in Catholic circles, when you become a godparent you become part of the family so even widowed women wouldn't marry their child's godfather.
I should add that used to be, I dont think thats part of canon law anymore but ive just checked impediments to marriage for those who are greek orthodox and your situation would be one.

Thank you. I'm Catholic, but my bf isn't. Would the restriction apply in our case?
nah, I don't think it even applies in catholic law now. It used to though. I looked at the impediments for marriage for catholics and its not listed so I assume not.
