"In a universe of electrons and selfish genes, blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won't find any rhyme or reason in it, nor any justice. The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference.”

Zacs-master: //You either need to hone your English skills, or simply stop writing crap,//

I've never been told before that my English was lacking, however, we retired University senior lecturers are always ready to learn from the more erudite.

Regarding the Aberfan disaster & the Turkish earthquakes; both were products of man's stupidity, the first for allowing the build up of a huge slag heap next to a children's school & the second for building poor quality, sub-standard, high-rise concrete housing in a tectonic a plate area.

As for the dinosaurs; well they simply went the way of the thousands of other species that have become & are still becoming extinct because of environmental changes (it's a component of something called, 'evolution').
Khandro, you wrote 'When I look at the world, nature, & the universe, I see nothing but beauty, pattern & awesomeness'

That's quite a categorical statement. My posts regarding dinosaurs, earthquakes and Aberfan show that either your observations, or the true intent of what you wrote are incorrect. Which is it?
By the way, your previous academic qualifications carry zero weight to me. In fact, they further baffle me as to your conclusions about the universe.

Zacs-Master; //My posts regarding dinosaurs, earthquakes and Aberfan show that either your observations, or the true intent of what you wrote are incorrect. Which is it?//

If there is anything wrong with my 'observations', please enlighten me.
Also, what do you mean by my 'true intent'?
It's fairly simple. I suppose, to put it another way which you might comprehend, why did you write that you 'see nothing but beauty, pattern & awesomeness' in the universe when, as outlined by my examples, there are events which prove this incorrect?
Question Author
ZM. If you can't see beauty in nature & the universe, I'm afraid I can't help you with that.
Whatever man does out of stupidity or ignorance should be laid at his door, nowhere else.
"Do you not understand the meaning of the word 'chaotic' ? "

i am fairly sure i do but i could be mistaken... would you care to explain where you think i have made a mistake?

i appreciate that you see the universe as harmonious and well ordered and beautiful... bits of it look like that to me while plenty of if is a lifeless void and other parts are crashing violently into other parts... i can certainly say that a hurricane or earthquake or tsunami or a plague that destroys an entire city or civilization is awe-inspiring but as a human being i hesitate to call them beautiful!
Khandro, this isn't about my observations of the universe, It's about yours. The dinosaurs extinction and earthquakes have nothing to do with mans stupidity.
Question Author
ZM, //The dinosaurs extinction and earthquakes have nothing to do with mans stupidity.//

Of course not! The dinosaurs became extinct because their environment could not support them & earthquakes are the perfectly natural result of the moving of the Earth's tectonic plates.

Deaths occurring from collapsing Slag heaps & sub-standard buildings are man's doing.
OK, lets take out Aberfan from the observations then. That's still 2 scenarios which prove the universe can't truly be observed as 'nothing but beauty' and therefor that your observations aren't true. And that's just on our miniscule spec of matter.
Who is responsible for mankind being created stupid ?

(Or imperfect for that matter.)
Question Author
^^^or evil,

ZM your putting words into my mouth, I didn't say, 'nothing but beauty'
I said;
I see nothing but beauty, pattern & awesomeness.
I didn't think I needed to reference the other two as they don't make any difference to the fact that I've proved that the universe is not 'nothing but beauty', which was your statement.
Question Author
Oh dear!
What's 'oh dear' about it, Khandro? You made a rather silly sweeping statement and I proved you wrong, senior lecture in.......meh.
I think Khandro got out of it by saying "I see nothing but beauty, pattern & awesomeness."
Awesomeness could I suppose be anything that khandro defines as being awesome.
Then he needs to define his version of 'awesomeness' and we can continue the debate. The word doesn't conjure up devastation, suffering or evil to me though. Daunting maybe, which at best means 'intimidating'.
I believe the definition of 'awe' involves the concept of fear. Not something I feel admiration for. Maybe it's a bit like 'respect'?

God - "Hey! you respeck me, man! Do you respeck me?"
Man - "No I don't. You're just a bully. I can't respect a bully."
God - "You 'fraid of me, man?"
Man - "Yes! But I still don't respect you."

Now girls!
I see you’ve run out of adult answers, Khandro, you who asked for sensible debate a few days ago as well. I’m not sure how you look yourself in the mirror.
