If a referendum was held on whether or not to reintroduce the death penalty, how would you vote?
What moral basis would dictate your choice?

I will leave this subject as I can see you have a different point of view, & that's what this site is all about.
Well, exactly, nailit. I meant that a psychopath might not have a conscience and not care about the victim, but will still understand it's illegal. They are rarely stupid.
//Never been In prison//
Exactly. So you are not really in the best place to be informed about prison conditions. Not knocking you TWR but don't believe everything that you see in the media (or even hear from a few clients)
Nothing wrong with having a different point of view, twr... It would get boring otherwise.
xx Nt Nt all
Must admit that over a lifetime my point of view has changed numerous times over several different subjects, BUT only by tring to take on board what others bring to the table.
This question is debated on here regularly and the same arguments come up over and again. Those who think it is acceptable will never change.
Just a couple of points, 10 Clarion St, the death penalty has been abolished permanently for ALL offences , treason was still a possible death penalty offence until after it was abolished for murder. But the death penalty no longer exists for any offence. It was finally abolished in 1998
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_(Abolition_of_Death_Penalty)_Act_1965
Ian Brady has been mentioned, Brady was pleading for decades to be allowed to commit suicide by starving himself to death. But it was not allowed ,he was forcibly tube fed for over 10 years to ensure he really did stay in prison until the end of his natural life as the sentence demanded.
naomi, mentioned public safety as a reason for killing murderers , well locking them up until the end of their natural life as is done for anyone who gets a 'whole life tariff' will do that.
Repeat and multiple murderers are among those who can receive a whole life tariff so that is another argument settled.
I think nalit and I are the only ones on AB who have actually met and talked to murderers , all the ones I have met are just normal people who had a one off moment of rage or lost control during an argument or after abuse. A death penalty would have done nothing to stop them.
*trying*
Night TWR.

Night twr xx
Eddie, // all the ones I have met are just normal people who had a one off moment of rage or lost control during an argument or after abuse. //

You have no experience of the rest then.
//I think nalit and I are the only ones on AB who have actually met and talked to murderers//
First hand experience always trumps ''well, I saw it on the tv'' mentality.
nailit, even if you believe it, Eddie hasn't met the hardened serial killers and child murderers.
'I think nalit and I are the only ones on AB who have actually met and talked to murderers'
Doubt it....
Naomi, neither EDDIE nor myself have experience of mass murderers, but we do both have experience of other killers. And the OP is about capital punishment for killers.
(presumably....Theland never stated that)
Finally I just want to show you this
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/years-wrongful-imprisonment-ricky-jackson-finally-free-180961434/
39 years in jail for a murder he did not commit .
naomi, No I have not met all of the people who had committed murder .
But I have met and talked to at least 9 , which I think is 9 more than you.
//Doubt it.... //
Do tell shoota :-)
If we start to lay down the guidelines of who can comment given their life experiences then threads will become stale indeed.
Eddie, not a word .....
//But I have met and talked to at least 9//
At one point while I was in Walton jail I had to walk along a wing that housed lifers in order to get my canteen. Looking at the cards on the doors I felt lucky that I only had a few months of hell left. These people had 20yrs upwards.
