My housing estate was invaded by about 25 JWs yesterday morning, so I tried a new tack to get rid of them.

I have tried saying " Sorry, I'm Jewish" or " Sorry, I'm a Catholic" to little avail over the years. I was washing the car, so couldn't really run inside to hide.

So I tried this. I told one old biddy that " sorry but I have been disfellowshipped "

She shot off back down my drive, as if the very devil was after her !

It's a strange world keyplus when you get two people, each trying to convince each other that they're right, when in reality both are wrong.

Keyplus, from your link: “Yet the King James version has grave defects ….that these defects are so many and so serious as to call for revision.”

Whilst I make no apology for the bible, which does indeed contain grave defects, the Koran is no different in that it also contains grave defects. As an unbiased observer, I would very much like to adjudicate between you and a Jehovah’s Witness – or any self-proclaimed Christian – in your proposed discussions. If the participants could find it within themselves to examine their respective books with a modicum of honesty, it would be an eye-opener for both. ;o)

By the way, why do you always set such store by what other men say – but only if they say what you want them to say?
Well said Naomi!!
My mum loved the JW's, they fixed her vacuum cleaner.
A friend of mine answered the door and told them he was a practising Muslim, they didn't hang around long there either.
Why bother to lie? Why not just tell them you are not interested! That is one thing with people today, they think nothing of telling a lie, whether it is a so called "white" lie or something more. I have found JWs to be good, honest and friendly. A company I used to work for would always employ them plus they are usually willing to work on the festive holidays to allow others to enjoy the holiday with family.
They are only human like you and me but are more inclined to follow the Bible than a lot of manmade tradition.
Naomi commented

''ClaryS, people who knock on my door uninvited to tell me about their religion are intruding. I don’t thank them for it. ''

Well a thank you is used as a tool, to be polite. Any Evangelist welcomes a rude, confrontational person as a challenge, that's why they go on the road, to convert people or try to. You being confrontational and rude is actually encouraging them.

I get lots of people cold-calling at my door uninvited and mostly unwelcome but I find a simple thank you but no thank you said politely with a smile works much better than a narration about why they should not have the audacity to knock on my door. If you feel the need to preach to them how much you dislike being 'bothered' then expect them to feel the need to preach to you why you need bothering. You are probably on their 'to do' list and they get extra brownie points for engaging you in conversation . lol
"They are only human like you and me but are more inclined to follow the Bible than a lot of manmade tradition"

But the bible is just a collection of man-made traditions.

As to evangelicals, the less said about them, the better. It would be nice if they took a "not interested" response as a "no", rather than an excuse to engage you in conversation, as many seem to, which is why some people feel compelled to be rude or confrontational or to lie.

Evangelists and missionaries seem to believe that their "good news" is actually good or news, unfortunately, and that is both their right and their duty to impose.

Lazygun you can't engage a closed door in conversation. A smile a thank you but no thank you and a closed door is all that is required. A number of people feel the need to justify their actions and get drawn into conversation this way, resulting in ridiculous lies and unnecessary rudeness.
Thank God when I read your title I thought you had been invaded by Jedward lookalikes
I see feeling the need to engage or impose your views upon others as an imposition, Clarys, and that, in essence, is what evangelists are attempting to do. They can and do attempt to justify or to rationalise their actions, but that is what they are doing.

In that regard they are little different than door to door salespersons. I do not feel the urge to smile at them either for the intrusion. And a smiling thanks but no thanks to evangelists often results in some additional desperate comment from them, in an effort to initiate.

They should confine themselves to their own communities, their own temples or perhaps to public spaces. Leave private residences private.
Well, if a person opening a door said no thank you and immediately closed it in my face, I would consider that person extremely rude, I might need help.
I just pointed to the right hand side of my door frame and said that I am Jewish and wrote in their little book NOT TO CALL AT MY ADDRESS. This does seem to work. Other people that I know have said very politely please mark my address as not to call again.
Vulcan42 A smile and a firm no thank you is direct, not rude.
Vulcan, I've just read you comment again and need to explain that I would not answer the door and without any other communication say 'Thank you but no thank you' -yes I agree that would be rude. I would listen to the person , see what they wanted, then answer appropriately.
Closing a door in my face is not friendly, irrespective of what's been said.
oh 'whatever' Vulcan I really have better things to do....Thank you but no thank you. :-/
I mean, culturally speaking, we have come to regard "cold calling" - unsolicited sales visits or telephone calls or even email - as unacceptable intrusions into our private lives, haven't we? A rude response has become considered the only acceptable way to deal with such intrusions.

So - why should evangelists expect to be treated any differently?
We always found a very large hairy GSD lying on the drive was ample discouragement but since we've lost Max we've had to go back to the old fashioned way and talk to them.I explain we're a Catholic family, we're not interested in their beliefs and would they please go away and stop bothering us and usually off they go. I did have to resort to stronger measures once but too be honest that was more to do with the fact that the man involved was an *** then his religious beliefs
