In discussions on R&S both here and elsewhere one often hears questions like
Why are you bothered?
Why don't you just let people believe what they want?
What harm does religion do?

This is one example of the harm religion can do.

and it's one of the reasons atheists never shut up about religion.

Doctorb - So you know Alan too.
Pixie, //Human error or knowledge doesn't change the facts.//

Knowledge changes the facts. You say something that's green is red, I say it's blue - but only the man who says it's green speaks the truth.
Yes chris.
That's one of his more printable quotes but no more relevant or irrelevant than those of marcus aurelius and voltaire. :)
Mibs, :-) I think we can rely on religion to see to that.
"You say something that's green is red, I say it's blue - but only the man who says it's green speaks the truth."

Only if green is the truth, otherwise its just another perspective.
Naomi, octavius, i did start that by saying "if something is green". What we think or perceive it as, doesn't change the truth. Humans don't cause truth, they can only learn it.
pixie, //What we think or perceive it as, doesn't change the truth.//

My point exactly. Thank you.
Many people have learnt that what they thought didn't alter the truth by one jot. Most of them are now dead.
"like housewives tales, quotes are pointless" - doctordb
You said "knowledge changes the facts." How?
It was a fact that the earth was the centre of the solar system. Knowledge has changed that fact.
Pixie, sorry I didn't make myself clear. Knowledge changes what people erroneously perceive to be facts.

Yet another good reason to not rely on religion :o)
-- answer removed --
I agree Naomi. And that was never a fact, doctorb, it was an error.
Back then it was a fact pixie. As many of today's facts will one day be falsehoods.
Yes if we are wrong about things today, they are not facts. Facts have to be true, and believing we're right, doesn't mean we are.
belief and fact are two very different things.
