Just read in my local paper that the body of a 36 year old man has been found
in his flat. He had apparently been dead for 3 months before he was found. None of his neighbours even knew who he was or that the flat was occupied. His family were too upset to comment but said he would be sadly missed.

Sorry, but he wasn't sadly missed for 3 months so why would he be now? Got my cynical head on today.

RIP JL

That is sad, it is a shame that the family hadn't missed him before.
3 months shoots by if people are busy.
Perhaps they didn't know where he was, or he rejected any contact with them.
You shouldn't necessarily jump to conclusions.
Plus no one expects a 36 year old to die. It's not like they haven't been to visit their elderly parents/grandparents.
My mum has gone a good two/three months without contacting me. She's having to spend lots of time looking out for the care of her father so I'm not high on her list of priorities right now, (rightly so). I have gone a good two or three months not contacting very good friends of mine in the past because I've had busy periods. I'm 34 next week. It happens.
