In some places, the sign is used to symbolise the head of a bull and is used to indicate that someone is talking BS. However, I'm with Erin - the most common usage is that popularised in heavy metal circles by Ronnie James Dio and was a sign his grandmother supposedly used to ward off the devil (and not, as is frequently claimed, an indication that the signer is a follower of Satan). Over time, it has lost any religious connotations and is typically used to indicate that something \m/ RAWKS \m/.
