Those people on here who are non believers, if you were true believers previously, what caused you to reject the notion of God and religion

Naomi. I followed her posts with interest and realised she was right.

What made it much easier was the fact that she, and other posters, believed in some sort of afterlife.

I think I clung on to religion because the thought of never seeing my Dad again was too much for me to bare.
I have witnessed too much hypocracy in religion, too much pain and suffering, I believe in an afterlife, but I dont believe in religion.

i have never been forced to believe in religion or afterlife, and never been convinced to start.
I still say I'm a Catholic though.

It's deep rooted....
i'm with ankou on this one
I wasn't forced. I was only made to say prayers morning, lunchtime, afternoon....and bed time :-)
Never been a believer.

As a young child I found the Biblical stories were obviously ludricous. I particularly remember the story of the walls of Jericho collapsing by marching around it seven times blowing trumpets.

Clearly it is a story designed to get people to do whatever they are told no matter how ridiculous.

For the believers, why did God not just make the walls fall down. Does He particularly love the sound of trumpets or is it just some kind of weird game like getting Abraham to the point of agreeing to sacrificing his son?
I don't think I even believed as a small child.... just didn't make sense to me
When i wasn't a child anymore. I despair that any rational adult could believe in a god.
My Mum was a protestant so Dad did all the Catholic church duties. He died not really caring and she became born again...

Brilliant...
Xerus, Darwin didn't recant anything. Even creationist websites admit that, eg http://www.answersing...ed-conversion-legend. That story is a lie, so please stop spreading it. Thanks.

are you two sisters ? ^^
I have been a Christian for over 50 years and my husband and most of my family are too. I can't imagine what life would be like without God and my faith and going to church each Sunday (just a little free church like a chapel) but its not my place to judge, its Gods......
God bless you all x
i think thats fine and dandy ann, you have your life sorted.

I think the turning point for me was when I asked a priest at school one day after he had finished telling the class that only those who believed in God and devoted themselves to Him would be saved, what about the people who lived thousands of years ago who never even heard of God? His answer was , that as they had never been baptised they could not enter heaven and the best they could hope for was a place called Limbo. That was enough for me.
Purgatory - the place where innocent babies go.
That'll learn 'em.
I prefer the theory that babies who die were near perfect souls that only needed to spend a short time on the earth and their life was a learning gift to those around them still rubbish but I think some might be helped to think that
