As if religion couldn't get any more ridiculous, it appears that orthodox Jews (who are religiously forbidden to do 'work' on the Sabbath) can now circumvent the problem of food preparation, refrigeration and seeing where they're going with electronic devices that have a handy built-in 'Sabbath' mode...

Is this insane or is it just me?

I adore the video, is very droll. As for the main question - well all the very devout religious types of all faiths have long sought to overcome restrictions placed upon them , has ever been so.

I do not see a vengeful being 'really' denying you providing food for your family on the Sabbath, a labour of love surely? However the tweaking of household gadgets is good.

When all is said and done if we are good people and care for our fellow man then we have no need to worry.
It's not just you - It is insane. It would be far better if 'sabbath mode' meant that the oven started playing 'Paranoid' or something.
God likes cheats. ;o)
adding an electronic gizmo widget is far easier than changing tradition.
// God likes cheats. ;o) //

Well yes, exactly Naomi. Not only is it insane, but it's also dishonest and stupid.

Dishonest because these things are all clearly underhand tricks to disobey the spirit of gods law, even if they think they're sticking to the letter of it (which they're not).

Stupid, because do they really think god's going to be fooled by such tricks?
cor, i thought it was more a marketing trick to sell some more gadgets rtaher than a convoluted ideological prank.
Ludwig, //Stupid, because do they really think god's going to be fooled by such tricks? //

Well, they're fooled enough by him, so maybe it works both ways, eh? ;o)
It's both. It's a marketing trick to sell gadgets to ideological pranskers and the mentally feeble.
Google isn't being my friend, today, primarily because I can't remember the precise terms to use to help my search........

However, I remember seeing something recently on TV whereby the Jewish definition of 'home' (?) has been circumnavigated by the erection of designated poles, around an area of a town, between which is strung a wire/thread which has been blessed, etc.
Now anything/one within the bounds of this area is considered to be adhering to whichever command they are actually breaking by NOT being within the traditional definition of *home*...
Here you are Jack..

'Jewish pole string sabbath' worked.
Thanks, Ludwig....:o)
There is a large populations of Catholics in South America. Catholics are supposed to eat fish on Fridays. In some parts they changed the definition of a fish to anything that can swim.

Religion makes it up as necessary. Otherwise how did the concept of a Christmas Ham ever get anywhere? It is probably the most oxymoronic concept in Christianity as the Bible forbids even touchin a pig.

What happened? A belief that pigs are unclean was getting in the way of the recruitment drive because Romans loved to eat pigs. No problem, just change the God's rules for all people of all times.
Funny how they can have an electric lamp with movable shutters to control the light. They can't switch off the power because that would be doing work but it is OK to move the shutters.

Fruitcakes all of them.
I just wondered if the Israeli military equipment had a Sabbath mode.
Here`s a tip - don`t get into the Shabbat lift in Tel Aviv on a Saturday. Not when you`re coming down from the 19th floor and you`re in a hurry!
^^ Ha ha! Got to agree with that! And taking a decent picnic to tide you over is not a bad idea either! :o)
It is insane that you feel this affects you. I can't see how. Really. Would you stop those people if you could ? What about people with mood rings ? Or Dowsers ? Or palm readers ? Honest, I am entirely at sea as to why this upsets you. It has zero to do with you.
LogicA, //It is insane//

That sums it up very nicely.

LogicA - “... Honest, I am entirely at sea as to why this upsets you. It has zero to do with you...”

It 'upsets' me because I have a pathological aversion to people who tell lies. People who tell lies in order to extract money from others makes me even more angry.

Dowsing has been proven time and again to have no scientific validity whatsoever. Palm reading, the same. Both of these so called techniques are often sold to people who know no better. Even if these services are provided for free, it's still a pack of lies. So called 'mood rings' simply contain liquid crystal that changes colour based on the body temperature of the wearer – this in no way can be said to reflect the emotional state of the wearer and yet that is how they are marketed and sold.

If you can't see why fleecing gullible people of their hard earned cash upsets me and others then I can only assume that you see no wrong in people who lie, cheat and steal in order to line their own pockets.
So this IS your business ? And what would you do to those people if you had the power ?
