It's usual but not universal. I believe Bulgarians, for example, nod for no.
I am nodding, now you guess it yourself.
It's either yes, no, or you're falling asleep......I give up - which is it?
No, some cultures wag their heads to agree with you. Different cultures, different ways of communicating, the same - very much - with hand gestures. What's in daily use here can be very insulting in other cultures.
It can be awkward - like the time I was approached by a Bulgarian prostitute. I can laugh about it now of course.
not in Bulgaria apparently - and Mongolia.
parts of turkey, iran and bengal too...
Here in Greece "No" is usually indicated by a minuscule (sometimes undetectable) upward jerk of the head (or just the eyebrows), and a faint tut.
Ludwig, you do make me laugh. :o)

I'll be honest Naomi, it's late and I've had a few glasses of wine and I'm in a silly mood. :-)
Ludwig, Love it!! I can't help laughing - and although I've also had a glass or two, that's the normal condition for me!!
The Japanese can be quite confusing too.
