Why do they say don't put soil in with the vegetation ? That can be difficult if as an example you are trying to rot down old grass sods or for that matter roots of any plants.

Soil can contain pernicious weed roots and some `orrible` other things, so if you want excellent compost be careful what you rot down. A good tip is to mix up one pint of human urine to seven parts water and sprinkle over the compost every foot or so of compost. Believe me, this works. With turf, just turn it upside down in a pile and leave for several months for a lovely loam.
