Should travellers be allowed to buy a plot of land and set up communities irrespective of planning laws just because it's their way of life?.

No.
I was going to type more..............but 'No' pretty much covers it.
Planning laws should apply to everyone equally. Nobody should be allowed to set up communities of any type without planning permission.
No.
I would rather they did that than just move in on land they don't own, and make a hoorrible mess.

There is one near us, and they are doing a beautiful job of setting up a very neat and tidy site, with quality fencing, lighting and hardcore.
No, no, no!! Definitely no. They should have to live to the same rules as the rest of us. I am tempted to buy a caravan and become a traveller!!
No.
It is hard for travellers they are probably the most discriminated against group in the country.
The Tories removed the responsibilty from local authorities to provide them with sites, they suffer from a lack of access to education.
Culturally they are rootless, but times have changed, they like to stay amongst their own (we all do, birds of a feather..) there were some on the news the other night and one said that he wanted to have a settled lifestyle but maintain his traveller status, it's one or tuther, I feel.

Are there any yes's out there?.
Your question basically boils down to "can a given group of people just choose to opt out of one of society's laws because it doesn't suit them?". To that my answer is no.

I do believe however that travellers should be allowed to buy a plot of land and settle on it and shouldn't be prevented from doing so just because of local prejudice but some places are suitable and others aren't.

no - how is that their way of life? Travellers tell the world they're nomadic and here in Ireland that's recognised by the govt as being a seperate ethnic group. In practice the only ones who actually travel anywhere are the convoys (of Irish travellers) that come here from the UK during the summer and leave wherever they stop in a bloody mess, runnning roughshod over the rest of society. And no, that's honestly not a crass generalisation.
