gnome
Just to add some explanation to Swilly's answer...(I trust you don't mind, S?) In the mid-1960s, the Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, referred to Swiss bankers as "the gnomes of Zrich". This was because they were speculating in British currency and hiding all the gold in their subterranean vaults, just as gnomes supposedly did in caves, according to fairy tales.
why have you answered yr own question swilly?
Yes, I was wondering about that. I noticed that the answer was Swilly's, but totally overlooked the fact that the question was, too!
swilly, it appears, is asking/ answering questions from Net Riddler/ Languid. Various users of this site are doing so. swilly, for your information, you'll find more of the same in the People & Places category of this site.
