I love this site... have been a member for far too long lol

I rarely post but am always here and as a vegan I am basically gobsmacked at times at peoples attitude towards my lifestyle choice and yes it is a choice. As is yours.

BUT [from the Vegan Society]

Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.

At 47 years of age [50 this year] I adopted the Vegan lifestyle because I became aware of the apathy and my own jaded sense of what is right and wrong. Right to kill a pig... but not a dog? blah blah blah

Have you ever watched any documentaries concerning veganism? Earthlings? Cowspiracy? What the health?

Do you know what cognitive dissonance is?

I'm not posting this to be confrontational, I am truley interested in what people think :)

Not veganism naomi, but vegeterianism and I'm starting tomorrow when I go shopping for food. I totally agree with andres, there is far too much suffering in the animal world, all down to us. How awful for them to know they are going to die.

//How awful for them [animals] to know they are going to die.//

They don't know they are going to die. They have no concept of life and/or death. They know they face hazards and perils and their natural instinct is to avoid them, but they don't know they will end up dead because they don't know what dead is. Before you ask, of course I don't know this for certain because no animal has ever told me so. But I'm fairly sure.
You've said that before calicogirl, but you always come back !
Just your opinion NJ, NOT mine !
Animals do know what dead is, I've see it with my own eyes. I've seen a sheep protect its dead baby, I've seen a horse guard its dead field buddy until someone found it. Animals can smell death and I don't mean the smell of decomposition, I mean the process of death.
Spot on CallieB--^^^--- They smell death especially in the abattoirs and it terrifies them.
All this so called talk on caring for the sheep, cows and pigs, making sure they have a good life, call the vet when they are sick, nurse them back to health. How about bring em in to sit by the fire in the winter. And after all that caring, we still bonk em on the head, and pop em in the oven. lol :)
CallieB, Shall we just do it your way then, just let every animal on the planet keep breeding, till all the fields are crammed packed full to the brim, until there's no grazing land left, and watch them starve to death, and rot in the field. Or cull them so we have healthy herds and habitat, and eat them to save burning them.
Teacake are you the vicars tea party shock jock or a get the last word in luvvie! I prefer my teacakes cut in half toasted and slathered in butter. Yum!
teacake "we still bonk em on the head, and pop em in the oven. lol"

a) you do, we don't.

b) lol? I doubt if the animals are laughing out loud...

(Oh PS: Baldric. Pomposity suits you, of course, but could you get your AB editor friends to sort out the editing so we can EASILY use italics, underlines, bold, or whatever, rather than capitals?)
It’s a dog eat dog world.

I would go vegan if the world could sustain that, but it couldn’t. To grow veg you need a field with chemicals to keep animals away. That kills so much life. Nothing is moral free, we’re animals, it is how it is. I have nothing against vegans, there needs to be a balance, but i draw the line at those with an ego trip thinking they’re ethically and morally superior. Life is life just live it.
Last word please. I just think its so funny that we are still going to eat them, including me, after all that caring, and loving. The powers that be will want us to take them on holiday soon, before we bonk em on the head.
Teacake what on earth are you on about? I eat meat, all kinds of meat. Concern about animal welfare is not the privilege of the sanctimonious Veggies and Vegans.
//To grow veg you need a field with chemicals to keep animals away. //

what an utter load of manure!

Ever heard of organically grown veg? You are obviously not a gardener.
Callie...you just made me choke on my coffee...;-)
You’ve obviously not thought it through. The amount of rabbits, birds, insects that are killed to sustain a field of vegetables is in the high numbers.

I’ve heard if organic, have you heard of organic pest control?

CallieB, Why would a sheep protect a lamb if, as you say, it knows what death is? what is the point of protecting a dead animal? Strange too, that according to you NJ has only given his opinion but you write your opinion as a fact.
I'd say, coming off a bit hot.
I'm not even sure what gardening has to do with mass agriculture.
