I know HM would never curtsy to another I understand that but...would a handshake really do the trick? I'm just curious....

Monarchs have an equal footing so bowing or curtsying isn't necessary, a respectful greeting if a first meeting or a friendlier one if a repeat meeting.

Viva the Republic....
high five?
Amen .
I wish I could recall the Buckingham Palace switchboard operator's spiel when the Queen Mother rang her daughter in Buck House from St Jame's Palace a spit down the road,
It went something like,"Your Royal Highness, I have her Royal Highness the Queen Mother wishing to speak to your Highness. Is your Highness available to take Her Royal Highness the Queen Mother's call?
Words pretty much to that effect. :-)
I think at the pre Olympic drinks at Buck House there was a lot of kissing on the cheek going on, one or two of the younger monarchs and/or their spouses did a slight bow to HM, maybe in acknowledgement of her seniority and longevity.
