Buenchico: (a) I support immigration because all of the statistics show us that immigration benefits the UK financially (and because it broadens our culture)
VE: We're going to have to disagree on the financial benefits bit, Buenchico. Seen loads of numbers; none seem to take into account the indirect costs. But give me a link anyway.
It "broadens our culture"? Isn't there a that depends qualification needed here? Particular groups like the Huegenots and the Lombards brought useful skills to this country. What societal benefits (FGM apart) do Somalis bring?
Buenchico: (b) I detest ALL religions (and Christianity in particular) I see Islam as no better or worse than any other such utter claptrap.
VE: A common, but implausible view: why should religion be less diverse in moral consequence than political ideologies are? Example: in a modern pluralistic democracy which religion is likely to produce the more congenial citizens (assuming its adherents are acting in accord with their faith? Would that be the followers of Christ who said "Love your enemies and bless those who persecute you", or the followers of Mohammed who are told in the Koran that "you are the best of peoples ever raised up [who] believe in Allah" while those who reject Mohammed are "the worst of creatures"?
Buenchico: (c) I recognise racism in those people who protest that they're not racist (but quite blatantly are)
VE: And now you've found another one - except that I don't go around protesting anything.
Buenchico: (d) I oppose Brexit because it would be economically disastrous and a step backwards from Europe becoming a SINGLE country (rather than any type of confederation of states), as it ultimately needs to be.
VE: You may be absolutely right - or totally wrong - or somewhere in between. If we ever get Brexit we'll find out, won't we? I take comfort, however, from the observation that the same parties who make this claim were wrong - and obviously so - about the ERM and the Euro.
I'm afraid I see your single country in Orwellian terms.
