Why Are People Such Terrible Spellers Nowadays ?

Do they not read books ? My children are 28+ and would I would be ashamed if their spelling was as bad as I read on some posts.

Another manifestation of the general lowering of standards that we have seen taking place during the last few decades. Teachers were sometimes told not to force children to learn; let them discover things when they are ready, was the mantra.

If the idea of letting the young discover things for themselves, rather than teaching them, spread through the animal kingdom, most species would be extinct within a generation.

Blame 'jolly phonics' -the most ridiculous way to teach children to read and write. Having said that does it really matter if I spell color like that rather than colour? Some people get absolutely ridiculous over spelling mistakes that can easily be read. My youngest is a fantastic storyteller but he gets so embroiled in the story when writing an essay all grammar and spelling goes out of the window. I would rather read an interesting and exciting story with Sp's than a boring Grammatical correct text withno mistakes.

It's such a shame, I find great pleasure in reading , as my children do, and I honestly can say most of my education has come from reading. It really hurts when I see the way ( young ) people disrespect a language by not trying to write it correctly.

My OH is middle aged and very educated but he makes SP's like a 10 year old -and one of my daughters has a very high IQ -within the top 10% in the country - she is severely dyslexic and cannot write a sentence without huge spelling mistakes. There are worse things in life than spelling a word wrong.

In my opinion, it depends on your age Retro. An adult , I think, should be able to spell.

You could start with OFSTED condemning formal spelling lessons - Oh, goodness, I don't know where to start, sorry. I was an English teacher who gave up when I was informed that at A-level spelling and grammar should not matter about grading a language as long as the meaning and understanding of the student was clear.

I was also an exam marker for SATS (13 yrs old). Grade standards explicitly mentioned 'general soundness in spelling' as a marking guide. I considered that, at 13 yrs of age, consistently misspelling/mistaking 'there/their' did not constitute soundness in spelling - I was asked to re-mark my papers and told that I was too harsh. Eventually I gave that up, too.

I'm not certain 'young' people are worse than older people. There may be some difference on average but the 'problem' certainly isn't confined to youngsters- in fact most posts on here come from not so young people

jourdain -I thought kids sat their SATS at 11? Could be wrong as none of mine have ever done them (private education). And they actually all had Grammar lessons, they know more about grammar than me (obviously as one never starts a sentence with 'and' lol!

Well I suppose we are from the " old school " Jordain. My hips and says it is similarily happening in Japan. Shame though. Two beautiful languages slowly deteriorating.

Of course there are more important things than spelling but if there's a right or wrong way to do something, however trivial, then why not do it correctly.

Why is it some people start every word in a sentence with a capital letter !!!! :-)
