amidst the events yesterday in Woolwich there's alot of nationalist sloganism being posted on FB usually with 'Proud to be British' as the forerunner.

Are you 'Proud to be British'?

I'm not. Recently in Wales the English B&B owner was telling me of all the anti-English pubs not to visit. In Scotland my English in-laws have been refused service in a shop because they are English.

So am I proud to be English.

Again not really. Northerners may refer to me as a 'southern softie' etc etc. Less spiteful than our Scots and Welsh neighbours but definitely an us/them thing going on with the North Divide.

So am I proud to be Southern?

Not really. I support Southampton and wouldnt dream of driving my car with its 'scummer' stickers on in Portsmouth.

So am I proud to be me?

not always!

Lol Salla, I put up Union Jack bunting outside last summer, by January it had faded to a rather "interesting" mix of colours- resembled sod all like our flag!
Yours must have come from Poundland....... :-)
I got mine at Waitrose,
(Not,really, I lied)
They did, come from Poundland I mean, lol.
Proud of all the good and kind people of all nationalities that I've come across
and of my fellow countrymen who are prepared to accept them as they are. Some of our least proud moments as a nation have been spent trying to mould others to our ways.
I am proud to be me.
Yes, I am proud to be British.
If you look up the dictionary definitions of proud, you may not want to be so.
Erection?
Wrong post.......

Mine came from QD - the replacement for Woolworths.
Daffy -- I don't know quite how seriously to take that survey I posted. However I've been on MMOs and other online chat sites and usually not found people to be so disapproving of the English. Or perhaps (because one of them was fairly regulated) it's just never talked about.

Except the French, whom the Americans seem to really hate for some reason. "Oh, he's quitting early -- probably a Frenchman," etc., not uncommon.

Shame you've had that experience, I'm not sure if it comes to that I ever talked about where I came from on most MMOs so maybe I was lucky.
I feel quite lucky to have been born here and not some hellhole like North Korea or Somalia, but luck is all it was. It's nothing to be proud of.
That's true Ludwig

I do feel quite lucky to be British!
To be truthful though jake, although I agree with your principle of being proud of your achievements rather than things you had no part in, I will admit to being proud of the great job this country did of hosting the Olympics.

I don't know how that works, but there you go.
Ludwig, You're a closet patriot. ;o)
Maybe Naomi. It's true that for the same reasons that I don't feel proud to be British or English, I don't feel ashamed of it either.
I'm not sure anymore what being "British" means. Sometimes I feel I'm in a foreign country.
The same here Edmund.
I am with Daffy and China on this - as I have opined before.

i am white British by a fortunate accident of birth. i have done what i can to contribute to the society in which I live, which is nowhere near enough to claim any ownership of the bit of the planet I inherit.

I certainly don't want the EDL 'defending' Britain from foreigners because they think it is their right so to do - that smacks of the sort of unassailable arrogance and self-rightiousness that makes their right-wing philosphy so odious, and their violkence to support it unaceptable - even if it can be dressed up as 'expressing their anger'.
Snafu03 - What Scottish shop refused to serve your English in-laws?
