Hi there.

The other day me a few friends were walking when we saw a few poor lads shining shoes so we decided to get our shoes shined as well as be charitable as it was near christmas. There were 3 white lads and one black boy who i purposefully walked pass as it felt extremely embarrassing and reminded me of slavery days ( I'm caucasion ) I did at the end give the white shoe shiner who done my shoes a twenty pound note and said loudly "This is for all of you to share" as i didn't want my issues to be the reason why the black kid didn't eat that night as my friends also out of embarrassment had gone to the white boys and left the black boy out.

Have any of you been embarrassed at the shoeshiners or in a similar situation? How would you have acted had you been in my position that night?

Ron.

I would have wondered why I was living in the 19th century.
I wear crocs or suede trainers, so i wouldn't have been having my shoes polished!!
Have never seen a shoeshiner in Scotland - but then again, maybe I haven't been looking too hard.
As this site is based in the UK, there aren't a great deal of shoeshiners working in the UK, however, as I have never had any dealing with "shoeshiners", I haven't any basis on which to give an opinion as to my actions in this case.
I have never come across a shoe shiner!
My shoes thrive on neglect.
Understand what you are saying but can't see me hiring the service anyway.
I'd be far too busy going to see whether the Barges were being 'toted' and the Bales lifted correctly to have the time to get my shoes shon.
£20 per shoe shine!!.......Hmmmm....wonder if you'd feel the same about a white, Irish redhead.........food for thought here.......wouldn't mind topping up the handbag fund.
i think that's quite nice ... getting your shoes shined.

they have guys at some of the London stations sometimes.

I've never had mine done. If I was wearing shiny boots, I could, I suppose.
Disregarding the 'shoeshine' your question is really - would I have avoided the Black boy, my answer is no.
i had my husbands shoes shined last ttime we went to a posh hotel - just left them outside the door and the butler did it. Didn't feel embarrassed
I smell troll.
The black boy's name was Black?
I left my shoes outside the door of a hotel room in Paddington. Some lowlife pinched them. :-(

Thanks for all of your answers.

It's not something i ever thought about and was quite surprised at how guilty i felt afterwards when i reflected on this peculiar situation.

sorry, sandy ... I had to walk back to my own hotel, and it was raining, and I don't know where I'd left my own shoes. If I'd known it was you, I'd have slipped some money under the door.
