I shall answer part two first, it is 'illegal', the clue is in the word fake. The ones that say hey are legal are actually not 'legal' as such, as there is no national identity scheme yet in the UK, but validated by a company that has followed recognised ID checks to issue them. Unless of course they are Government issed ones from an EU country. The only legal ID acceptable in most organisations in the UK would be a valid driving licence, (picture probably) a valid UK passport or an armed forces ID card, I only know it as a 1250 in the RAF. My ex husband could do anything anywhere with one of those. ( think I am right there)

Most places want a passport or drivers' licence as ID, and won�t accept anything less. If you faked those, you'd be in big trouble.

If it's an ID of you and has correct information and your photo in it it's legal (or 'not illegal' might be a better description). However no-one is compelled to recognise it if they don't want to.

If it's fake (ie false information, or not a real eg licence) then it's illegal.

Regarding the use of fake id, it is a criminal offence to make or use a fake drivers licence, passport or birth cert. (e.g. the state produced ones) but the other ones that are available on the web etc (e.g. dodgy vertification cards) are in themselves legal to make, sell and own... but as soon as you use one to purchase alcohol (when you are underage) it become illegal due to the fraudulent use you are trying to make.

Having said all that they do appear to work very well for this purpose, as may news reports attest (for example see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/36310 44.stm) - if you do get one be cautious with it and think hard about what you are planning to do, but having said all that I used to use one when I was a kid but stupidly had all my real details on it except my date of birth so when it finally got spotted as a fake I was in some degree of trouble (not too serious I must say) � so if you do get one make a fake name up too and that way if worst comes to worst you can leg it and leave the card behind without too much to worry about)

Sorry if anyone thinks I am encouraging an illegal act, I�m not really and I don�t think it�s a good idea to copy what I used to do (and this was one of the more tame things) BUT I am a realist and teens will always use these until we all have national scheme set up or ID cards forced upon us all by the state (another issue though).

Yes, fake id's do work.
