Does anyone know what a doctor does when they get sick - do they self-diagnose and refer themselves to the hospital consultant, or do they have a G.P. who they visit ??

If there is a practice with more than one doctor, they will usually prescribe for each other, and if it's a single doctor, he will have a reciprocal arrangement with another doctor or practice.

Doctor's cannot self-prescribe, it's an offence punishable by being struck off the Medical Register - or rather it should be! Harold Shipman self-prescribed for himself to provide for a drug habit, but got away with a warning, and was allowed to continue practising - with horrifying consequences.

I imagine that since his case, the law is adhered to rather more closely.

Reminds me of a question I came across once. Youve just moved to a new town where there are only two dentists, both equidistant from where you now live. One has a dazzling smile, the other looks a bit of a mess, with uneven and protruding teeth. Which dentist would you choose to go to?

The first reaction is to say youd go to the one with the dazzling smile. Wrong of course! Hes been seen to by the other dentist, the Ken Dodd lookalike, so hes the one you should visit!

(Sorry, Ken, no offence!)
