Townies / Chavs

Does anybody live in a place that doesn't have a Townie / Chav problem?
And are your Townies / Chavs proud of being the missing link or do they consider themselves above "Townies" / "Chavs" ?
Portsmouth is pretty much overrun with the stupid spoilt hedonistic primates on their mopeds and not-quite-rally-car style Fiat Punto's.

I agree with sammd, theydo seem to be more conencentrated in particular pockets of cities. Although i liken that to how flies loiter round what dogs leave on the pavement.
Coolbeastie is also right though, as sammd will know, there is an area to the northern edge of portsmouth which is patchy middle class. There is still a growing number of twonies here. My theory is that they just are spoilt children who's parents cant discipline themselves or their children enough to stop them devolving into townie-ism.

I met some Townies (not out of preference), who considered themselves above "Chavs". despite wearing tight jeans withturn ups, those sillybody warmers, fur lined coats.... Theycalled me a "Chav", but later decided i was "too much of a geek to be a Chav." I was so disappointed. Still, eloquent of the lowly primate to call me a geek!

I've been going on various sites lately checking out different towns and EVERYONE talks endlessly about townies/chavs? I'm so very old (45) that I really don't know how to identify them! Am I passing them in the street without noticing? Are they wearing notices proclaiming their chavness that I'm too short-sighted to see? I'm looking everywhere for them now and need to know what to do if I see one :) Somebody help me. By the way I come from a town in Norfolk if that's any help.
Im glad Im not the only one whos not sure what a chav or a townie is - but having got two teenage sons, one of whom does - horror of horrors - wear a hoody and go out with his mates in the evening (and ride a moped) and one who has much more geekier less "cool" mates I can understand the confusion.
Older son is thankfully growing out of the hoody stage, now being 18 and able to drive and go into clubs, pubs etc. Hopefully he will shortly become a civilised human being and seems to be slowly approaching this desired (by me) state.
The younger one doesnt like the chavs, he is intimated by the large groups of them and as his mates are more kind of geeky (but all very pleasant young men) he seems to be less likely to join the hoody brigade but ... he is just 16 and has suddenly become a rather aggressive and feels ready to take on the chavs on a kind of "I can take em" chinny, testosterone laden way.
This is scary to me as I hear tales of the ones round here beating other kids with metal bars etc and basically being horrible bullies. So are chavs just working class kids who are allowed out too much and wear hoodies and whos parents would be horrified at their behaviour? or are they some kind of unfortunate sub-class whos parents dont give a poo and who just do what they like?

To be honest, regarding hoodies, it depends what type. There's the "goth" hoodies, normally nice posh people. And then there's the Nike/Ellesse/Fred Perry type hoodie. They easily fit into the aforementioned herd.
The annoying thing (well, one of many) about Townies is that they just dont have the ability to respect anyone or anything, not in any form. Obviously teenagers are "rebellious" but most know the limits even if they push them. A typical townie attitude is to keep fighting despite knowing full well that you're going to lose. Obviously this isn't in an honourable way, its just stupid.
I'd like to point out not all people who wear hoodies are chavs. You can get surfer style hoodies and students also wear hoodies, often with their university club names on the back. These are completely different from the chav style hoodies (usually more sporty looking, often with stripes down the arm) which are often put together with matching sporty looking trousers (also stripey), and of course not forgetting the baseball cap. But not all people who wear baseball caps are chavs and a student on the way home from the gym may also be misidentified as a chav. Chavs cars are usually cheap and small, sometimes old bangers, sometimes done up with loud exhausts and a thumping sub, however all people with subs are not chavs...
Are you confused mydogsandme?! I think the best way to describe a chav is you just know when you see one! Someone who looks a bit common and doesn't know how to speak proper English!

Chavs also tend to be aggressive and like to pick fights (avoid eye contact if possible!)
Hi , read the thread with interest, but am slightly concerned as to the reference to "those silly body warmers."
I am not a chav, as far as I know, though I do have multiply children which could lead me onto slightly dodgy ground, but I do wear a body warmer when walking the dog or at the beach. I do this for the simple reason that when you are walking fast in the winter, a coat is too warm and sans coat proves too cold. I do however, call it my 'life preserver' a la "back to the Future", just for comedy purposes, and it was purchased at 'Country Casuals'. I have a red one and black one. The red one is slightly more gardeny wear than the black which could be worn out shopping in the Farm Shop, for example, I live in the country and hubby works in the city.
Am I safe, or is the body warmer too incriminating and proof of my North Kent Origins (Come on you Gills!)?
