Many in Scotland still call April 1st Hunty Gowk. If you tried to fool someone after midday you would be told:

Hunty Gowk’s passed and you're the fool at last. Hunty Gowk is up the tree and your the fool as well as me.

In the N.E. fool is pronounced feel.

Wow, thanks for that Chris. My dad always called a cuckoo a gowk.
I've never heard of Hunty Gowk.
Hunt The Gowk, perhaps?

Dinna laugh, dinna smile
Hunt the Gowk another mile.

Yes, many variations depending on where you live. Believe it originally came from Hunt the Gowk.
When I was a child growing up in Yorkshire, it was April Fools day till noon, and then on it was 'Legging up Day' - never heard of it anywhere else.
Did you live anywhere near to Hull, Ferlew?
