If you read all the accounts .. it's gonna be unlikely.
Plus, with known 'gold bullion' stories and inventions from that area of the world .. it's also unlikely.
Some hundreds of miles from Kiribati and Howland Island (just after start of their journey leg) which is where they might have run out of fuel, also makes this claim unlikely.
can't think of any reason why she'd have been carrying gold bullion. The idea on those pioneering early flights was to make the plane as light as possible.

I prefer the eaten-by-crabs explanation.

Why should anybody feel the need to prove that she was gay?

My grandma's had her photo taken alongside Amelia.

Apparently she, Amelia that is, not my gran, landed her plane down on my grans family's farm in Ireland, so the entire family pegged it outside for a look (well, looking at spuds can only hold your interest for long I guess!), and grouped round Amelia and the plane and had a photo taken. Amelia looks fantastic, leather jacket and jodphurs.

Must see if i can find it, my mum's still got it somewhere.
