Dont you think this worn out and dated practice of having to put a pound coin in a shopping wheelie is a bit of a needless pain thesedays? If it is to deter a would- be thief from stealing the contraption ( who'd want a trolly anyway ?-- youd want to be off yours to want to steal one ) --- the loss of a lousy pound coin wouldnt deter a thief from such stupidity.! Supermarket bosses please "listen up " !! This needless delay is such a waste of time for those of us always in a hurry. What does it achieve? Does "The panel " agree with me on this ?

Shopping trolleys cost about £100, I suspect they rely on the shopper's need for a quid to ensure they get back their expensive piece of equipment each time you use it.
Its one way supermarkets ensure trolleys are returned and stored in an orderly fashion. Plus have you seen the price of scrap metal lately?
Rather than to stop them being pinched it's to make sure you don't leave them all over the place. You can't get the £1 back unless you connect back up with the trolleys so although it's a pain it's better than a mess.
Before the pound trolleys they were just left all over the car park and sometimes in the street.
If you go to a shoe repair/duplicate key shop you can buy a disk which you keep on a key-ring which you can use. They help charities and it saves faffing around for a pound coin every time you need a trolley.
I knicked a supermarket trolley once - I was going to build a dalek and needed it for the wheels.
I was going to use the main bit as a giant hanging basket, but I ended up dumping that.
It was up an alleyway so it wasn't too blatant a theft.
I got a 'lift' home in a supermarket trolley a few years ago on new years eve.

Here's the most original use of a stolen SMT I've ever seen:

So ...no !
No, don't agree with you either, you're on your own on this one inquisitor.

I had thought previously that I would get the most obvious response and which Prudie. ummmmmm and Oranger affirmed--- that tidiness is the thing in the car park but dont ASDA have people to do just that --- So, methinks , employment for some-- a good thing is it not.? I challange the scrap metal case however. You wouldnt be bothered about your pound (retrievable ) if you were getting a £100 for it by absconding with the cage. == my original argument precisely !! Maybe emeraldblue has the answer !? This rediculous debate can go on forever, if i dont stop now. tks all for replies.
Also, we have locap shopkeepers who'd quite happily nick them to use in their own little mini markets round here.
The local authority will fine a supermarket if one of it's trolleys is found dumped or abandoned
people don't necessarily steal them so much as wheel them home, unload, then dump them in the river. I find it takes about 10 seconds to put in the coin and to retrieve it, but obviously you're a lot busier than I am.
Not only does it do away with the need for extra staff to be out collecting trolleys from all over the car park and surrounding area it also helps to avoid damage to peoples cars where lazy gits cant be bothered to walk 10 yards to pop their trolley back.

Even in busy car parks where there are trolley collectors, the amount of stray trolleys and cars damaged can be astounding. The stores are trying to avoid this extra hassle.
Mind you, despite the need to put £1.00 in trollies, they still go walkabouts anyway. When our store was done up (co op) they bought 10 trollies, now 2 years later, we're down to 6.
six trolleys? What a megastore. I'd heard that the people there were well trolleyed, and this proves it.
lol, shaddap, its little more than an express store.
