The National Lottery heritage fund has awarded a group of Rumanian travellers 250,000, to help them set up their own community.
It is hoped this will improve relations with the local villagers and lead to a better understanding of each others cultures.

Do you think this is money well spent?

No but then again why am I surprised
That link is no good. Cannot find this story anywhere. Even did a search of the HLF website and no mention.

Are you sure this is true. Do you have a link?
better than last week's grant to Posh and Becks to help them answer their critics.
Not this one is it?

53,000 to a charity that does mental health work in Armenia and Romania etc

Or is it from the same source that gave us Thomas-the-tank-engine-gate ?

Could you cut 'n' paste the main parts of the story (watch you don't go over the posting limit set by AB).
Doesn't surprise me at all, put a bunch of guardianistas in charge of dishing out the dosh and that's what you get. Try and get a few quid for a scout's mini bus and you might as well p155 in the wind but 100K for Peruvian Guinea Pig farmers? no problem, Romanian Gypos? no problem. They'll be giving it to those itinerant scum that infest the UK next. Madness, no put me in charge of dishing it out!
Let's wait to see whether the story has any basis or whether it's simply an errant dailymailism.
The Daily Mail was the first place I looked. Couldn't find it there, unless it is an old story.
errant cambusism, more likely. But it certainly should be true, so here's hoping
Mrs T,

"Just 2,000 of the Cusichaca Trusts award went on guinea pigs, and besides, they are a traditional part of the South American diet."

But I couldn't eat a whole one.
what the **** does the south american diet have to do with the lottery fund in the uk?? the money is wasted on a lot of sh i t e because the ****** toffs are in charge ofdishing it out!!!!
How can they set up their own community AND be travellers?
I think it's very important to understand the different cultures.

I'd like to start a culture that involves frollocking in fields with flowers in your hair, no work and rather a lot of drink, drugs and sex. If I can prove that this is infinitely good for the soul then do you think I can get a grant?

I also have aspirations of becoming a mermaid.
U do smell of fish so you're halfway there....
Got a feeling that this is another one of those fake stories that occasionally gets put about.

Now, I've done a bit of research and have found the following:

http://www.davidrowan.com/2006/08/sunday-times -magazine-where-did-all.html

MrsT - where did you get 100,000 from? It appears that you've overstated by a factor 50. The article puts the grant at 2,000.

However, it doesn't go on to say what connection the farmers have to the UK.

It's all odd, but it would help if people could stop posting exaggerations and...well...fibs.
I think some people work on the principle that if you sling enough mud some of it has to stick in the end.

Unfortunately the reality is if you sling enough mud in the end only other mudslingers will shake your hand
I also did a little research into the Lottery's good causes site and came up with this little gem, only cost a mere 25,600, you couldn't make it up could you?
