I am a crossdresser and get sooo embarrassed when I buy clothes in shops. What I would like to know is do shop assistants think me rediculous, amusing or just another customer?
I almost faint and can barely walk away from the checkout.

You haven't said whether you are dressed as male or female when you shop :-)

If you dress as a female, perhaps it would make you feel more comfortable shopping if you go dressed in male clothing, after all, loads of men go shopping for their wives / girlfriends etc so I doubt a shop assistant would bat an eyelid.
Like Sammy, I'd say 'why not just go dressed male'? Loads of men buy things for their wives/girlfriends/mistresses.

Why get so worked up, anyway? It's your choice, your life, you don't bother or hurt anyone, so you've every right to dress as you please. IMHO.

As you asked, I think the younger assistants would find it funny (for reasons they didn't quite know themselves) and the older would either not care at all or think 'it's his life'. I think most people get more tolerant as they get older.

I am male and always dress so but the embarrassment does not get less no matter how often I shop.
Why not try Mail Order. I have found an excellent company. NOT just for transvestites (be very wary of TV shops, the prices shoot up alarmingly) a good guarantee of full satisfaction or refund without question, NO charge for postage etc. I do tend to use the catalogue for big sizes but there is a fairly wide range. Drop a line to Formint Ltd. FREEPOST, Bournemouth BH9 3BR. or look at .........

i think you should go dressed as a woman definatley,,yes im sure peeps would look or say is that....and younger assistants would prob have a little giggle .The thing you gotta remember is,try and shrug the embarrassment of ,you gotta tuffen up,hold your head up high, always look on the bright side, your not hurting anybody, and if you gave them some friendley banter, and a confident smile, they probably look forward to you coming in again,,,cos us women love all that stuff,if you feel your self shrinking into that embarrassment it will engulf you,so snap out of it change the way you deal with it ,,and the best of look to you xx
i work in a womens clothes shop and i dont think you have anything to worry about, we have lots of men coming in buying things for wives/girlfriends/children.

We do occassionally have a few that come in and have really odd stories to as who and why they are buying clothes for, which all the staff think are crossdressers but we dont think anything of them.

dont worry about it, i dont think they'll even think anything of serving you. just dont say weird stories! :-)
errrm, I have twice had to help a guy try on ladies shoes, and I told him afterwards that we have a 28 day refund policy, and if he preferrred to try them on at home with the full oufit he could and if they were unsuiable he could return them for a full refund. he didn't return, but I know he does go to one of the larger branches in Manchester where the bank staff who work with him accross the road aren't likely to be sitting on the next seat to him trying the stock on.

you need professional help
Why should he? He enjoys it, and hurts no one?

Just 'cos it disturbs you...
My mate used to work in Long Tall Sally and she said they had loads of blokes in buying clothes for themselves. She said none of them were bothered and the only time they really had a giggle about it was when someone made up a bizzare story about who it was for. Hold your head up and be proud to be you :) x
Take a female friend with you. Not only would you feel less intimidated, she could give you some practical fashion advice.
Customers: I generally see them be nice to them them say goodbye and forget them - you shouldn't worry, just think what they get up to in there spare time, its no ones business but your own. =D
phaloides, I'm with Ed Strong on this one. Please take a lady friend with you. There is a guy where I live who wears women's clothes and full make up. He is over 6' tall, chunky with it and an adam's apple that could take your eye out! His clothes are from the 50s and not put together properly at all colourwise. Had a friend given him guidance I am sure he would enjoy himself much more on his outings. As for clothes shopping why not try the charity shops, they have tons of stuff at reasonable prices. Good luck.
