I bought the Betterware jar opener - a rubber gripper sort of device - and it works for me. (My problem wasn't age, just lack of togetherness regarding jars!). My ex mother-in-law used to swear by Betterlifehealthcare.com, so have a look at their site.

Lakeland do a range of 'Good Grips' items such as a potato peeler with a stout rubber handle.
Also you can get a flat rubber disc about 5and3/4" in diameter which is handy for opening jars with tight lids.I think you can get these from Lakeland also and from Tesco.
To open coke or lemonade type bottle tops if you wind a thick rubber band round the cap and then grip tightly and twist that should help.

Hi Jackie! Just a thought, but if your mum is elderly, is there any way she could get some aids from her physio department (or similar)? I have rheumatoid arthritis and have difficult opening jars, cans etc and have been given various aids from my physio nurse, and they've cost me nothing. The best two things I've been given is a ring-pull aid (for ring pulls on cans) and a thing for unsealing jars so I can open them. Unfortunately, some of these things still require a fair amount of dexterity of the wrist - which defeats the purpose of the aid! Good luck in your quest!
jackyp the 2 thinks louquest describes are available in lakeland ltd. Im only 21 but still need them to open ring pull tins and sealed jars andother thing that my old flat mate used to use for opening bottles and jars was a rubber glove, because its grippy it helps.

Hopefully jackyp the link below will open up to show you the Jarkey and the Magi Pull. The previous page will show the jar screw thingy. All mine came from Lakeland, but I'm sure you can buy them now in Sainsbury's.
