Every time I pass a bank there is a huge queue outside and I fail to understand why. Surely most people now do online banking, have direct debits etc all set up and there are loads of ATMs on the street. I've had no need to go into an actual bank in living memory so can somebody please explain?

Not everyone has on line banking.
I too am puzzled by banks are busy or even why branches even exist.
I don't know but have you thought to ask a couple of folk in the queue?

Be interesting to read what they tell you. :-P
I don't ever intend having online banking
TTT, I would bet that there are more visiting customers than those on line.
This, to me, just proves how popular banks still are and yet they are closing at an alarming rate. My own bank is closing soon and I will miss it, it's been a part of my local High Street for all of my life and the lovely girls who work there will all be out of work. Not everyone wants to bank on-line.
Another probable reason that inside the bank there might not be room for social distancing only allowing one customer at a time at the cashiers window.

I know that not everyone does online banking but, assuming they have internet access, I don't understand why as it makes life so much easier. I wouldn't ask people in the queue as that would be intrusive.
My bank has very few branches but I have to use the Post Office to pay in cheques. I do use a bank to pay in cheques for our dog clubs though, although I have discovered you don't have to queue you can use a machine inside the banking hall. Of course if they are social distancing then the queue would look longer from outside much like the supermarket queues.

Danny - but why do they need to go to a cashiers window in the first place?
To transact business, obviously.
they are only open a short time, they ask what you want it has to be "essential" they like lots of other companies are not giving full customer service! am fed up with them all, the two times I have had to go into a bank felt v unwelcome. YET it is my money!!! wait until them like others are saying we have this offer and that offer do come to us, ----- well no thanks.

What does one "transact" in a bank nowadays?
Some accounts still have pass books too that need updating or when paying in they have to be made up. Also queries about accounts, statements etc. Probably the same amount of people as usual but you don't normally see them as they would have been inside the bank closer together.
Diddly, if you don't know the meaning of transecting business I am wasting my time with you.Ciao.
Question Author
Danny - so you can't give me an example of "transacting business" so you dismiss my question. Fine.
I don't do a great deal of on-line banking, but blimey I think I've only had to venture into it on one occasion since opening my account many moons ago.
Paying in notes/coins and cheques is the most common over the counter transaction and getting change for till floats too.

I post cheques in now since my branch closed.
I can give you an example or two, but I don't like your attitude, so I'm not going to bother.
diddly: "I know that not everyone does online banking but, assuming they have internet access, I don't understand why as it makes life so much easier" - diddly talking sense! I must be dreaming!
