My son-in-law's nephew has bought some new trainers.
They cost him the princely sum of £495-00.... The world has gone mad and he's got more money than sense!

Dyson sucks, same as Hoover :D
Lol
And when someone decides what they want is to pay almost half a £k for shoes, then the world's gone mad (or inflation has).
SharonA @ 16;30; It would take me quite some time to blow nearly £500 on the nags. Even then, there is a slim chance i may back a few winners along the way. In a couple of months time, those £500 trainers will be super-ceded by the next (more expensive) 'must have' pair and will be consigned to the back of the wardrobe, a-la-Imelda-Marcos.

Talking to my nephew and great nephew yesterday. It looks like it's normal to spend this sort of money on clothes. One had spent £300 on a belt to go with his £1,500 leather jacket. I could buy a car for that sort of money!
Worse part is, it seems the more expensive, the uglier the shoe is.

Not taught/learnt the value of money then. Doesn't bode well.
Maybe remind them how many hours of work that represents (after tax).
Melv . You do know the sole of these trainers contain Flubber, he will walk and jump on air. Money well spent .;-)
It is mad, obscene. “His money his choice”. Cobblers. If the Emperor has no clothes, say so!

I forgot to mention that the T shirt he was wearing cost him £160-00!!!
How on earth is it obscene?

He can spend his money as he sees fit, we all can.
How many can honestly say that when young, they never bought seemingly silly things for silly ( to others at least )money? It's what young people do. It won't be forever.
This is similar to my thread on football mascots -

https://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Sport/Football/Question1639533.html

- if the punter is prepared to pay, then why not.

It's also a matter of choice - for example, for that price he could get a couple of the best seats on Friday evening to see Phantom of the Opera (£424) in London, with some left over for expenses. But, unlike the trainers, that would only last 3 hours. So you could say the trainers are better value for money. Not that I would ;-)
Take a walk down most high streets, wonder how little it would cost to improve the lives of those poor wretches sleeping in doorways, and tell me again it ain’t obscene.
Come a rainy day when he needs the money he squandered upon trifling frivolous items. He may bitterly regret such wasteful purchases.
Well, I shall tell you now Bainbrig that if anyone tapped me on the shoulder whilst I was purchasing something and reminded me of those less well off out there I wouldn't be mild mannered Mamya for long.

How on earth does anyone know what (me) or this young man does for others?

If he is neglecting his family duties or not looking towards his future then it's for family to point out - not anonymous judgement makers on the internet.

My children would be incensed if I discussed their finances on here.
The more intriguing question is why would anybody, other than those undertaking some sort of training, want to wear trainers, whatever they cost?

The "trainer" phenomenon, together with other sports clothing being pedalled as acceptable apparel to wear when out and about, is one of the great marketing successes (and confidence tricks) of recent times. I always have a quiet chuckle to myself when I see a fifty-something pot-bellied gentleman waddling down to the pub in his “trainers”. :-)
However much any one thing costs, we could all say I could buy x bottles of wine/a car/feed the family for y weeks/go to the theatre/football/opera/holiday/whatever. If people are happy to spend their hard-earned cash on what they want, who is anyone to judge on what they buy.
This lad may know what he's doing...or he may have wasted his cash on a folly. If the former applies, then he will keep them as original and possibly make money. If he wears them he will lose money.
People who understand brand value can, and do make money from investing.
‘Brand Value’ is a nonsense put about by Brand Owners to make their TAT seem more valuable.

Wake up, wake up! The Emperor is Naked.
