Is it usual to buy a gift for a close relation when he retires? I really hadn't given it a thought and just bought a card but now my daughter says it is the 'done' thing. They are not having a party or anything and are leaving on holiday the next day. I don't want to appear mean, (which I'm not) so wondered what others do in this situation please.

no ..I never have ..
Magazine subscription? Saga springs to mind, although it's a bit girly now.
Not unless I worked with them.
The Oldie, then, Bookbinder?
The Oldie, Psybbo? That seems to be rather 'ramming it in your face' that the recipient is old, I think.
Didn't mean it that way, the crossword is a stinker!
The only time I have been involved with a retirement gift was of colleagues. It is a work 'thing' nothing to do with friends and family so I don't see the association.

Thank you for replying, actually he is only 55 so maybe something 'girlie' :0)
You're right about the crossword in The Oldie, Psybbo. Saga's crossword isn't a challenge any more.

I do agree with that Eccles Cake but just wanted some opinions
I never have.
It wouldn't cross my mind to buy a retirement gift - that's for his workplace to give to him - but I might send a card.
I think your daughter is wrong here. When a person retires, especially a long-served colleague, its customary for others at work, to "club together" and buy that person a gift, but I have never heard of it being done family Members before.

A card would seem to suffice, and perhaps a family meal, to celebrate the retirement.

Thank you all for your replies, I have decided that a card is o.k. and maybe a meal together when they are back from holiday. What would we do without AB xx
We would all flounder around, not knowing what to do rosyposy !
Ive always found a bottle of something does the trick!
No

work colleagues club together and may do so
A night cap ?
Have to say I've never heard of anyone giving a gift to someone retiring save the company they work for and/or colleagues. Unsure where your daughter got that idea from.
