Depends how serious you want to go hugoboss, you can buy a  really cheap mask and fins or really top of the range!   If you are keen, I'd suggest going into your local dive shop (or online) and get some help from them. My mask was around 40 but will last forever (hopefully) and fins a bit more!!!! If you leave it til you get on holiday you may struggle depending where you are to get anything decent.

thanks for your help Shaz, i'm not particularly bothered about the quality. Obviously it's got to be good, but I'm not really serious about it. Something cheap and functional would be sufficient.

Doesn't matter about the price - you can pick some up in dive shops for 15-20 upwards. The main point is to ensure it fits your face ( which has nothing to do with the price)

To do this (and you are guaranteed to look stupid) - Flip the strap out of the way and place the mask over your face. Then breathe in through your nose to make a seal with the mask against your face. While continuing to breathe in through your nose, let go of the mask and see how much pressure it takes to pull the mask from your face. The more effort involved, the better the fit.

A well fitting mask will stop it leaking (and ensure it is comfortable to wear).

PS - when you are wearing the mask while snorkelling, don't pull the mask strap too tight - it is better to keep it in place by making a slight vacuum in the mask by "sucking" some of the air out through your nose.

Personally - I would only take a mask with me (easy to pack), then hire the fins & snorkel out there.

HTH

PS - if you go to a dive shop, they are used to seeing this behaviour and are happy for you to test the fit out on their display masks.
