I suppose it depends a great deal on the age of the person decorating the tree - there is nothing quite so evocative as having the decorations you had when the children were small if you are in that age category - have tried several times to bring myself into the "fashionable colour" trend but for example "blue and gold" are not the same as a riot of multi-coloured lights and decorations for the tree. Just comes down to personal taste I suppose.
i have a green tree and this year as last year i have a woodlands animal theme, all my decorations are either animal/ pine cones and flowers, i have animal such as sqiurells bird, robins, foxs reindeer and stuff. plus a very large robin on top. looks quite good too.
Mine are silver and white- been that way for several years now. I have now got to the stage with them when I go "awwww remember this one?" as we decorate the tree.

We also started a 'tradition' of buying a decoration especially for Mini Boo- this year we'll add a 3rd to the tree, usually a Disney one.
I had blues, silvers, lilacs and pale pinks a couple of years ago which I really liked, but thought made the room look quite cold and un-Christmassy. So last year I changed them all for more traditional reds and golds and it was amazing how much more warm and cosy the room looked! I use all sorts of different decorations, baubles, icicles and stars, and last year I used that lovely wired ribbon (about 2 inches wide) which I curled into a long chain (so they looked like ringlets) and then hung them from the tree vertically very effective and a nice change to tinsel which I cant stand the smell of (weird I know!)

i change mine every time a new colour scheme takes my fancey , this year year im having red black and silver, but i love to see a tradtional tree full of lots of santas and colours etc , and always used to luv it has a kid and adult! at getting out the same decorations wed always had as children, u forget all about them dont you untill u see them and then its like ooh rember this one and always used to bring back lovely meories of xmas's past , lovely idea boo at adding one every year for little boo
My tree is a lighter shade of green and slimmer than the usual type. We have gold, copper and bronze coloured baubles on it interspersed with gold shimmery leaf shaped decs. I quite like autumnal colours and it is in keeping with the more rustic setting of living in a little old cottage in a rural area. I do like modern and funky looking trees and decs but they would look a bit peculiar in our house.

We previously had a traditional green tree and gold and red decs with a musical theme. But after several years I got bored with it and wanted something different.

What I'd really love is to have a real tree but we lack space and a decent one is usually quite wide around the bottom....bit like me really!
My tree was always gold and white but a couple of years ago I introduced som burnt orange bauble and had less white. This year I've seen some lovely deep purple ones and I'm tempted. We do buy one decoration each year and some I've had for over 20 years.
My Mum has what looks like a piece of string that goes on hers every year, which was the tinsel she had the first year she was married 49 years ago, all the silver has gone.......and you know what, I bet when she's gone I'll keep putting that piece of string on my tree!
mine are mainly silver and white, but i change a few here and there, this year i have a lot of pink, probably due to babies first christmas! Every year i also buy dated baubles or special edition ones as keepsakes!
We got a fibre optic 3 years ago and I love it but I just cant bear to part with some of the old deccie's my kids chose, like those wooden teddy's and snowmen, aww and the little nativity set.
Fibre optic for me too , set it up... plug it in ....sorted !!
beerbelly
ditto just plug it in and watch it twinkle, i also put gold icicles on, they go nice with white fibre optic, wot colour is your fibre tree? Coloured or white optics?
my fibre optic tree is a bushy dark green, like a traditional tree, not into one that look like twigs or palm leaves or white, each to their own, it woul;d be a boring world if everybody liked the same things.
Same old things come out of ourloft every year. It's almost a tradition now.

My parents kept the same ones for over 50 years and every year they became a little more tatty, but for sentimental reasons nobody could ever bear to throw them away and replace them as they seemed to encapsulate so many years of memories..
